Clear picture with super quick and easy setup.,
I was a little worried that this may be too âinexpensiveâ to do a very good job. I was wrong. This is a great camera set for the price. Everything arrives packaged very well. It came with two cameras, two cables, two plugs, and two stands for the cameras. The cameras are removable from the stands if you want to tuck them away somewhere a bit more inconspicuous (we have one tucked into a fake ficus tree).
The whole set-up took 10-15 minutes total. From the time I opened the box, downloaded the app to my phone, created an account, and the moment that I was recording a video from a camera was less than 15 minutes. Way easier than I was expecting.
You can either use a MICRO SD card to record images and videos, you can do nothing more than just watch live feed from your phone or device without any recording, or you can use their cloud storage option which is $84.99 a year. I have a SD card for our cameras.
This also has very good sound if you want to turn that on. You can set up specific areas for the motion sensor to pick up versus just recording everything all of the time. The app will alert you to movement if you turn the setting on. It has a terrific night vision option that is superior to many others that I have seen. You can also zoom in on your picture form your phone.
Overall this seems to be a great camera set and for a great price. I would definitely recommend it.
I am including some photos that show how the camera looks, how the picture looks from my phone of what the camera is recording, a night version of the same view, and a picture of how the camera looks from outside of my house and looking at the window (camera isnât hidden at ALL).
Nice Price,
Great for the price. The subscription is a joke.,
The quality is great for the price. The camera is removable from the white frame if you wanted to make a custom enclosure to make your camera more hidden. You could even use double sided industrial tape to mount it anywhere without an enclosure.
2 Cameras for $50 isnât bad. I have a simple D-Link 930 model camera that is 480p resolution. It is old and at first I was looking for more of this model. They arenât made anymore and the ones still out there cost about the same as these Yi home cameras. All my D-Link could do was detect motion and I can immediately log in for live view. It didnât record. I also have a Ring doorbell camera and a Ring Backyard Floodlight camera. I really wanted to buy a Ring Spotlight camera since Ring is by far the easiest to use and is the best quality small business/home security system you can get, but I didnât want to spend another $200 for the Spotlight camera.
The Ring Cloud Subscription cost is $3 per camera a month. Or $10 a month for unlimited cameras. They store 1 minute videos for up to 30 days.
Yi Home Cloud subscription cost is about $9 a month for up to 5 cameras but they only hold onto the video for 7 days. Which works in my situation. They have longer video storing plans for more money, but it is significantly more than I am paying with Ring. Yi Home gives you a 1-month free subscription when you create a new account but it is only valid on one camera. Even though I bought 2…
The alerts seem to work well on Yi Home cameras. However it only stores a 6 second clip of video when motion is caught. If you want to see full video it says you need to put in a micro SD card (Max 32GB). This tells me that the full video is only stored locally on the camera and not in the cloud. That being said Yiâs subscription cost is absolutely a rip-off. Iâd save money in the long run with a Ring camera. Ring cameras are bulkier, but much higher quality and more reasonable in their subscription cost.
Conclusion: for my use I mainly need motion detection and ability to see live video. Iâll try the micro SD card option and probably keep the cameras and just not use the cloud subscription since it is relatively expensive for how little it records. If you want to take security seriously a cloud service is crucial so that if someone breaks in and destroys or steals your camera you still have your video in the cloud. Otherwise if they steal your camera your evidence against them is gone. My outer perimeter of my home is pretty well covered by my Ring cameras so I am not too concerned with using these for a couple rooms inside my home without a cloud subscription. I will probably not use the white frame and make my cameras more difficult to find so in the rare chance someone breaks they wonât know they are being recorded so they wonât know to destroy or steal the camera. If you need something good enough to act as a security system get Ring devices. Iâve looked into Arlo and Nest cameras as well and those suck so donât get those. I use 2 Ring Spotlight cameras at work for our small business and they cover the only entrances to our office. They work flawlessly with no false alarms and its easy to use. I do not trust actual security systems or services because the Police and security companies get so many false alarms that they donât respond immediately. It takes a minute or two of your alarm going off before your system calls the security company. They will call you to verify the alarm is real. If you donât respond they will alert the police which in my personal experience as a being the in charge of security for multiple businesses police will arrive on average 20-30 minutes later. Iâve spoken with officers about this response time before and they told me they get false alarms all the time from home and business security systems. He told me that if I see someone on
live camera with my own eyes and call them they will respond immediately. This is why itâs best to take security into your own hands. Even if you donât realize someone broke into your property until the next morning it is better to have video evidence in the cloud the next day than to have a criminal break in and escape quickly without any trace left behind for when the police arrive 30 minutes later.
Yi Pros:
1) $25 a piece. Very affordable
2) Good iOS app. Easy to use.
3) Live view from app
4) Motion detection
5) 32GB video storage locally
6) 720p resolution. No itâs not 1080p but for the price this is great.
7) Small and lightweight. Camera is actually pretty small without the white frame and can be easily hidden.
8) powered by a micro USB cable. So it can also be powered by a USB powerbank if you wanted the camera to be portable temporarily like maybe for use as a poor mans baby monitor.
9) Build quality is actually very nice. Doesnât feel or look cheap.
Cons:
1) Subscription service…
